The Science-Based Targets Initiative (SBTI) has gained traction in the business world as an initiative that sets targets for companies to reduce their emissions in line with the goals of the Paris Agreement
What is the scientific basis behind the SBTI, and how does it work?
The SBTI is based on the latest climate science and uses a rigorous methodology to evaluate a company's emissions data and set targets grounded in this science. The SBTI considers a company's current emissions and projected emissions based on growth plans, and sets targets aligned with limiting global warming to well below 2 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels as per the Paris Agreement
Companies can set two types of science-based targets:
Absolute targets and Intensity targets. Absolute targets specify a reduction target in metric tons of CO2 equivalent (CO2e) irrespective of the company's production or revenue levels. Intensity targets, however, specify a target based on emissions per unit of output like emissions per unit of revenue or per unit of product sold
For recognition by the SBTI, a company's targets must meet specific criteria. The targets should cover 90% or more of the company's emissions, encompassing both direct and indirect emissions from its supply chain. They must be ambitious enough to contribute to the goal of limiting global warming to below 2 degrees Celsius, grounded in the latest climate science, and aligned with the objectives of the Paris Agreement.
The SBTI offers numerous benefits to companies that set science-based targets. It provides a clear framework to achieve targets aligned with the latest climate science, leading to improved energy efficiency, reduced environmental impact, and enhanced reputation with customers, investors, and other stakeholders.
In conclusion, the Science-Based Targets Initiative provides a scientific and credible framework for companies to set and achieve ambitious emissions reduction targets. By aligning with the latest climate science and the goals of the Paris Agreement, companies can reduce their environmental impact, improve their energy efficiency, and demonstrate their commitment to addressing climate change. As more and more companies set science-based targets through the SBTI, we can move closer to a low-carbon economy and a more future.
